Main Door Materials Compared: Teak, Engineered Wood, Steel, WPC and uPVC

Your main door is your home’s first line of security and its first impression. Here is how the popular materials compare on strength, maintenance and cost.

Your main door has three jobs: keep the home secure, stand up to sun and rain for decades, and make a good first impression. The material you choose decides how well it does all three — and how much you will spend on upkeep.

Solid teak wood

Teak is the traditional choice in Indian homes. It is dense, naturally resistant to termites and moisture, and can be carved or polished to a deep finish. A good teak main door lasts 30+ years, but it is the most expensive option and needs re-polishing every two to three years if exposed to direct sun.

Engineered wood and veneer

Engineered doors use a stable core (often pine or a hardwood blockboard) with a real-wood veneer on top. They look like solid wood, warp less, and cost roughly half as much as teak. Choose a thick (40–45 mm) shutter with a solid core for a main door.

Steel security doors

Steel doors with multi-point locking are the strongest option for apartments and ground-floor homes. Modern designs come with wood-grain finishes, so they no longer look industrial. Check that the door has an insulated core so it does not heat up in summer.

WPC and uPVC

WPC (wood-plastic composite) and uPVC are waterproof and termite-proof, which makes them excellent for bathrooms, balconies and utility doors. For a main door they are best used where budget matters more than a premium look.

Standard main door size

The most common main door size in India is 3.5 × 7 ft (about 1050 × 2100 mm), slightly wider than bedroom doors (3 × 7 ft). Wider doors make moving furniture easier and feel more welcoming.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best wood for a main door?

Teak is the best overall for strength and durability. Sal and sheesham are good lower-cost hardwoods for frames and shutters.

Is a steel door better than a wooden door?

For security, yes. For appearance and warmth, many people prefer wood or an engineered-wood door with a steel inner layer.
